Migraines, Tension Headaches, or Chronic Neck Pain?
The Problem May Be Coming From Your Neck
Many recurring headaches do not actually begin in the head.
In many cases, they originate from irritation in the neck.
Dr. Robert Shortell has been helping patients with spinal-related headaches and neck pain at the Cromwell Chiropractic Center since 1997.
Does This Sound Like You?
Many patients who visit our office with headaches or neck pain describe one or more of the following:
- Headaches that begin with neck stiffness
- Tight shoulders or upper back tension
- A feeling that the head is too heavy for the neck
- Pain behind the eyes or in the temples
- Headaches after working on a compute
- Restricted neck movement while driving
- Difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position
- Headaches that improve when lying down
If several of these sound familiar, your symptoms may be coming from your neck.
How the Neck Can Cause Headaches
The neck is made of seven bones with discs between them.
When viewed from the side, it should have a natural curve that distributes the weight of the head and protects the spinal cord.
When one or more of these bones lose proper motion or alignment, nerve irritation can develop.
For explanation purposes, the neck can be divided into three regions: upper, middle, and lower.
Upper Neck Problems May Be Associated With:
- Migraines
- Pain behind the eyes
- Sinus pressure
- Light sensitivity
- Feeling like the head is too heavy for the neck
Middle Neck Problems May Be Associated With:
- Tension headaches
- Jaw pain or TMJ problems
- Ear pressure or blocked ears
- Tight shoulder muscles
Lower Neck Problems May Be Associated With:
- Pain at the base of the neck
- Pain between the shoulder blades
- Difficulty turning the head while driving
- Difficulty finding a comfortable pillow
